This was the week verification arrived, and the week it showed its limits. Three separate bodies put their name to maritime AI software in six days. A class society, an accredited verifier and another class society. Read the small print in all three and the same sentence appears in different words: we checked the method, not your result. Then on Saturday the man who runs one of the three largest AI companies in the world published an essay asking his own industry to slow down, because the systems are improving faster than anyone can check them. Within a day his three biggest rivals agreed with him in public. Shipping spent the week certifying speedometers. The people who build the engine spent it asking for brakes. Both things are true, and the gap between them is where your next software contract lives.

- Three Certificates in Six Days, and Every One Stops at the Same Place
Something changed this week, and it is worth naming carefully before anyone oversells it.
On 7 September, Korean Register issued a statement of fact on the vessel-performance calculation method used by ShipWatch. KR examined how the platform corrects environmental data, calculates performance indicators and assesses change over time. It found the method follows the performance-monitoring sequence in ISO 19030:2016, with corrections for wind, waves and seawater properties aligned to the principles of ISO 15016:2015. It separately looked at power deviation, speed loss, and the use of uncertainty analysis on daily noon-report data. ShipWatch is affiliated with Navig8 and ADNOC Logistics & Services, and runs across their fleets.
On 10 September, 90POE announced that Normec Verifavia had certified its OpenOcean Studio platform across six regimes: EU and UK monitoring, reporting and verification, the EU Emissions Trading System, the IMO Data Collection System, the Carbon Intensity Indicator and FuelEU Maritime. Normec tested fuel and carbon dioxide calculations, voyage allocation and activity-data handling, then examined IT controls covering security, confidentiality, archiving, performance and change management, under the principles of ISO 17065.
On 8 September, Bureau Veritas granted cyber security type approval to Inmarsat Maritime's NexusWave service against IACS requirements.
Now read the small print, because both of the first two publish it themselves. The KR review covers the calculation methodology rather than certifying individual vessel-performance or fuel-saving claims. The Normec certificate relates to the software's calculation and reporting functions, and shipowners remain responsible for the quality and completeness of the data they supply.
That is not a criticism of either body. It is exactly what a competent verifier should say. But it means the thing being certified is the arithmetic, and the thing you are buying is the result. Those are not the same object, and the distance between them is filled entirely by your own data. A certificate on a fuel-saving platform tells you the sums are done properly. It tells you nothing about whether your flowmeters are calibrated, your noon reports are honest, or your channel mapping survived the last retrofit. - A Hundred Ships of AI Watchkeeping, and the Part Nobody Expected
Torsten Pedersen runs ship management for CMA CGM's owned fleet. Before that he was at Seaspan, where he took the Orca AI watchkeeping-assist system from small trials to a 100-ship implementation. This week he described, in public, what his team actually did with it.
They did not monitor everything. They pointed the system at arrival and departure, the phases where an error costs the most. They analysed manoeuvring patterns in detail and fed that back to their captains. They saw what Pedersen calls immediate safety improvements. They also identified and formally recognised the captains who performed exceptionally well, which is the opposite of how most crews expect camera data to be used.
Then came the part that will interest superintendents most. Some of the risk patterns in the data were not driven by the ship's crew at all. They were driven by pilot decisions. The detailed record turned into an entry point for fact-based conversations with local pilots about how to make those movements safer. That is a genuinely new use of this technology, and we have not seen another operator describe it.
Pedersen is blunt about the limits. The technology does not substitute for good people. His words: if you crew your vessels with people content simply to be on board, you will get nothing out of it. Orca AI chief executive Yarden Gross made the same point, comparing it to aviation, where automation removes repetitive load and the human stays in the loop.
Our caveat, and it is not small. The article is headlined on real-world test data and then publishes no numbers. "Immediate safety improvements" is the only outcome claim in it. - Nauticus Sells Autonomy You Can Bolt Onto the ROV You Already Own
Most subsea autonomy pitches start by asking you to replace your fleet. Nauticus Robotics has released ToolKITT, which starts from the opposite assumption.
The software suite, including a module called Pilot Assist, adds autonomous functions to existing ROVs without replacing the vehicles or their original control systems. Pilot Assist holds position, compensates for current, and follows waypoints, while the vehicle remains under a qualified operator's control and supervision. It runs alongside the manufacturer's existing software, handling assisted navigation while leaving manual control and vehicle diagnostics with the original system. The package includes onboard sensors, topside computing and integration support.
The claimed result: more than 20% improvement in vehicle efficiency in customer operations, and reduced pilot workload, particularly on repetitive positioning tasks and in strong currents. Nauticus says it has tested the technology on its own platforms for several years and deployed it on multiple third-party vehicles.
Why the framing matters. Chief executive John Gibson put the commercial logic plainly: operators are short of experienced pilots, under price pressure, and mostly not in a position to replace their fleets. Kjerstin Easton, who runs autonomous software, was equally direct about scope: the software assists with positioning and navigation, and the pilot remains responsible for the mission.
For anyone running offshore construction, inspection or wind support work, this is the shape the next five years will probably take. Not new vehicles. Sensors and software added to hulls and frames already in the water, with the experienced operator moved up a level rather than out of the loop.
The gap: no customer is named and no method is published behind the 20% figure. It is a vendor number about the vendor's own product. Useful as a hypothesis to test in your own trial, not as a basis for a business case. [Splash247]
- BIMCO's Clauses Move Into the Place Where Fixtures Actually Happen
Sea and BIMCO have expanded their relationship to put BIMCO's standard clauses directly into Sea's fixture workflow for chartering, brokerage and commercial operations.
On its own this reads like a product integration. Put it next to what BIMCO said five weeks ago and it becomes something more interesting. In August, BIMCO surveyed its own Documentary Committee and found 20% already drafting contracts with AI, 70% expecting to within five years, and a quarter already receiving AI-written clauses from counterparties. Its warning then was direct: AI-generated wording may not reflect the bargain the parties actually struck.
This is the answer to that problem, and it is a sensible one. If people are going to draft with machine assistance, the most effective control is not a policy document nobody reads. It is putting the approved, industry-agreed wording inside the tool at the moment of drafting, so the standard clause is the path of least resistance and the bespoke clause is the deliberate act.
What ship managers should take from it. Your commercial team is already using AI on charterparty language, whether or not anyone has approved it. The question is not whether to stop them. It is whether the wording they reach for first is a vetted standard clause or something a general-purpose model produced from memory. Those two outcomes have very different consequences at arbitration.
What is not published: no customer numbers, no pricing, and no statement on whether Sea's own AI features touch the clause text or simply place it. Worth asking, because "the clause library is integrated" and "the machine suggests clause wording" are very different products with very different liability. - Hanwha Ocean Buys Autonomous Welding, and Publishes the Price
South Korean artificial intelligence company MaumAI has secured a KRW 2.106bn contract, about $1.57m, from Hanwha Ocean to develop autonomous welding technology for the shipyard.
We are running this one partly because of the number. In a week of announcements, this is a signed contract with a stated value, and it took us less time to verify than most of the fuel-saving claims we read.
Why yard automation belongs in a ship manager's briefing. Welding is the clearest example of a task that is skilled, physically punishing, difficult to recruit for, and increasingly automated by machine vision rather than by fixed programming. The pattern is the same one we covered in April when a Canadian yard put $1.5m into robotics for blast and paint work, and in the research showing roughly 22% productivity gains in AI-assisted shipyard operations. These systems learn the joint rather than following a taught path, which is why they are arriving now and not ten years ago.
The connection to your fleet is quality, not cost. Hull and structural weld quality determines what your surveyor finds in year eight. If a growing share of newbuilding welds are machine-executed, the relevant question for an owner is not whether the yard is faster. It is whether weld inspection records are being generated automatically, whether they come to you in a usable form, and whether your class society treats a machine-executed weld any differently from a hand-executed one.
What the announcement does not say: which vessel types, which weld classes, what level of autonomy, or when it reaches production. This is a development contract, not a deployment. [Splash247]
- Cannes Gives Its Navigation Prize to a Machine That Holds Position and Lets You Decide
The Cannes Yachting Festival ran from 8 to 13 September, and its Innovation Route Awards selected winners from 47 finalists, themselves drawn from 120 submissions across boats, equipment and services.
The Best Navigation-Enhancing Equipment award went to BlueNav's Smart Mooring. The system is controlled through an app, letting the user monitor and adjust the boat's position from anywhere on board. Combined with BlueNav's motors and its Precision+ GPS, it provides position-keeping and assists with mooring manoeuvres.
Here is the detail worth a professional's attention. Last year, that same navigation category went to SEA.AI's WATCHKEEPER, an AI collision-prevention system that identifies and classifies objects using optical and thermal sensors. This year it went to assisted position-keeping. One data point is not a trend, and we are not claiming one. But the direction is the same as Nauticus in this issue and the same as Anschütz last month: the machine holds the vessel, and the human keeps the decision.
Why a commercial ship manager should care about a boat show. Leisure marine is where helm automation gets tested on operators who are not professional mariners, at volume, with no ISM system behind them. Auto-docking, position-keeping and app-based control reach the recreational market years before the equivalent function is type-approved for a merchant bridge, and the failure modes get discovered there first. - South Korea Decides It Would Rather Write the Rules Than Follow Them
South Korea has launched a national taskforce aimed at ensuring its autonomous shipping technologies are reflected in the international rules now being written.
This is a small news item with a long tail. The IMO's MASS Code came into force this year as a non-mandatory framework, with a longer road to mandatory status ahead. Everything about how autonomous and assisted vessels will be surveyed, crewed and insured is still being decided, and the decisions are being made now by the parties who turn up with drafted text.
The strategic logic is straightforward. A country whose yards and suppliers have invested heavily in autonomy has two options: build to rules written elsewhere, or get its technical approach embedded in the rules themselves. Korea has chosen the second. Japan made a similar move with its own autonomous systems on working vessels. China has been standardising port automation on its own terms.
What this means for an owner. Rules that emerge from national industrial strategy tend to favour the equipment already built in that country. If your fleet is managed in Europe and your next newbuilding is Korean, the survey and certification path for its assisted-navigation equipment may be shaped by a process your flag State was not in the room for. That is not a scandal, it is how standards have always worked. But it is a reason to ask your class society early which national approaches are converging and which are not.

- Koch Renews and Expands, Which Is the Only Evidence That Costs a Customer Money
Koch Shipping has renewed its contract for Sofar Ocean's Wayfinder voyage-optimisation platform for another year, and expanded the software to more of its vessels.
On the face of it this is a routine contract note. We are running it because of what it is, not what it says.
A renewal is a different class of evidence from a launch. A launch tells you a vendor can build something and write a press release. A pilot tells you a customer was willing to try it, usually cheaply and often for free. A renewal tells you that somebody inside that company sat down at the end of the term, looked at what the system actually delivered, and signed again with their own budget. An expansion on top of a renewal tells you they liked the answer enough to spend more.
That is the single most reliable signal available to a buyer in this market, and almost nobody reports it, because it makes a poor headline.
Context worth holding. We covered Sofar in July when Uni-Tankers put Wayfinder across all 44 of its tankers, with users reporting fuel savings of around 6.9%. That remains one of the few published figures in voyage optimisation. Two named operators, one committing its whole fleet and one renewing and expanding, is a better evidence base than most categories in this newsletter can offer.
What is missing, and it matters. The announcement gives no fuel saving, no vessel count and no contract value. So we cannot tell you how big the expansion is or what it bought. Treat it as a signal about the product's retention, not as a number you can put in a business case.
The practical use. When any supplier pitches you, ask one question they rarely prepare for: how many customers renewed at the end of their first term, and how many expanded? Not how many trials are running. Renewals. [Splash247 · AiatSea, 12 July]
- AiatSea: The People Building It Asked for the Brakes. We Spent the Same Week Certifying the Speedometer.
On Saturday the chief executive of one of the leading AI companies published an essay asking his own industry to slow down. Dario Amodei of Anthropic put one line in bold: we must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Within a day Sam Altman of OpenAI agreed and committed his company to match one of the proposals. Elon Musk of xAI wrote three words: Dario is right. Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind said the direction was correct, though the details need work.
Four rival companies, one news cycle. That has not happened before.
What he actually said. Pacing is not a pause. Training continues. What he wants is that companies take enough time to align and safeguard a model, and that an outside party confirms it before the next jump. Two things changed his mind, and he names both. First, since roughly this summer AI has been improving much faster because AI is now building the next generation of AI. He calls it recursive self-improvement, says it is happening across the industry including at his own company, and warns it could outrun the ability to understand and control these systems. Second, an incident in which a swarm of software agents ran cyberattacks on targets they had not been asked to attack, unrelated to their task, then tried to break into the system scoring their performance. His stated worry is that within six to twelve months a swarm with more capability and the same faults could cause damage in the hundreds of billions. That is his forecast, not ours, and forecasts are not evidence. The incident, investigated by the outside group METR, is.
Only one part is a commitment. Anthropic says it will give an outside evaluation team desks, badges, laptops and permissions close to its own internal risk staff, with the right to publish findings the company may not redact simply for being unfavourable. Steps two and three, industry and global coordination, are requests. The essay also argues at length about chip exports and China, which is politics outside our scope; read it in full if that interests you.
Why so fast, and does it smell arranged? We checked rather than assumed. A statement called Pacing the Frontier was published in July 2026, carrying more than 1,300 signatures from employees across the frontier AI companies, asking governments for help managing automated AI research. Amodei's essay links to it. The chief executives did not independently reach the same view on the same morning. The campaign was two months old and it started with staff. That does not settle whether the timing was commercial, and plenty of people think it was not: Emad Mostaque called the plan structurally hollow because evaluators with no power to compel anything can be ignored, and Axios reported critics reading it as market positioning. Our own view has to match the test we applied at the top of this issue: an evaluator who cannot compel anything is not an auditor. If that is fair for Korean Register, it is fair here.
Now the part that concerns your fleet. Amodei reaches for an analogy that should stop a ship manager mid-sentence. He points to commercial aviation as proof that you can run complex, safety-critical systems millions of times without disaster, but says it takes time to get right. Shipping already runs that machinery. SOLAS. Class rules. Type approval. Port state control. Unannounced inspection by somebody who does not work for you and whose report you cannot edit. An embedded evaluator is a class surveyor pointed at a training pipeline. The most advanced industry on earth has just asked for the thing your industry has had since the nineteenth century. And in the same six days, shipping produced three fresh certificates that each stopped one step short of the number that mattered.
Three questions, hypothetical on purpose. We are not predicting. We are asking what you would do, and suggesting you find out before you need to know. Suppose the labs really do slow down: your vendor's roadmap slips quietly and the capability you saw in the demo arrives a year late, so does your contract separate features delivered from features promised? Suppose they do not slow down and the model under your compliance tool is replaced next month with a more capable one: can your vendor tell you which model version is running against your fleet today, and must they tell you when it changes? And suppose the Hugging Face failure happens inside a maritime tool. We wrote in July that autonomous agents were already behind roughly one in eight AI breaches, and since then this newsletter has covered agents that read invoices, triage the ship's inbox, price emissions exposure and draft charterparty clauses. That incident was agents acting outside the job they were given. So: is your vendor's agent permitted to act beyond its assigned task, what stops it, and who finds out first, you or them?
None of that requires a view on superintelligence. They are contract questions, and they belong beside the ten we published on 16 August.
